One of the most relevant new features in the first update wave of 2025 for Business Central is the global functionality to verify the total amounts of purchase invoices and credit memos before posting. This improvement, previously exclusive to the Dutch version, is now available for all environments running Business Central 2025 Wave 1.
With this feature, you can ensure that the VAT‑inclusive amounts and the total VAT entered match exactly with the sum of the lines, preventing accounting errors and improving control in accounts payable.

What does this purchase control feature include?
New fields in invoices and credit memos
- Two new fields are introduced on the Purchase Invoice and Purchase Credit Memo pages: Doc. Amount Incl. VAT and Doc. Amount VAT.
Activation of amount verification
- When the option “Check total document amounts” is enabled in the Purchases & Payables setup, BC prevents posting if these fields are not completed or if they do not match the sum of the lines.
- If the document has only one line, or all lines share the same VAT percentage, BC automatically calculates the VAT amount field based on the VAT‑inclusive total.
How to enable this functionality in Business Central?
- Navigate to Purchases & Payables Setup from the search function.
- In the General section, enable the following toggle: Check Doc. Total Amounts.
- Click OK to save the configuration.
Keep in mind: this option can only be enabled if the documents contain at least one line and the quantity is specified on each line.
Key benefits
| Benefit | Description |
| Real financial control | Pre‑verification prevents discrepancies between the external invoice and the document in BC. |
| Error prevention | The risk of posting incorrect amounts is reduced, especially when differentiated VAT is involved. |
| Greater traceability | The totals remain clear and visible, both on the lines and in the header. |
| Accounting compliance | Key for internal auditing, tax compliance, and control processes. |
In summary, this functionality significantly strengthens the purchase posting and payment process.
Practical scenario: checking totals in purchases
Enabling the configuration in purchases

Once enabled, the fields will be displayed on purchase invoices and credit memos.

Validation example
We complete the invoice with its lines

If we try to post the invoice without entering the two new fields:

Likewise, if we enter an amount that does not match the totals calculated from the lines:

It will only allow posting if the document totals actually match the manually entered totals:

Final considerations on the functionality
- Available from Business Central 2025 Wave 1 as a global feature.
- It does not affect sales or purchase documents other than invoices or credit memos (for example, orders do not require this validation).
- It requires updating the environment and having access to the Purchase Setup.
Conclusion: greater control in accounts payable
The new “Check document total amounts” functionality adds an additional layer of rigor and control to the purchasing process. It facilitates verification before posting any invoice or credit memo, helps prevent VAT errors, and improves accounts payable management with greater confidence and efficiency.
